National First Responders Day: What the First Responder Flag Represents

National First Responders Day is observed on October 28 to recognize and honor the brave men and women who protect our communities, often putting their own lives on the line to save others.

The first responder flag is a symbol of appreciation, sacrifice, courage, and solidarity. Different versions of the flag may use different colors, symbols, and designs, so the meaning depends on the specific flag.

What each color on the First Responder Flag means

Red — Firefighters
Represents the courage, bravery, and sacrifice of firefighters who run toward danger to rescue people, fight fires, and protect property.

Blue — Law Enforcement
Honors police officers who protect the public, uphold the law, and place themselves in harm’s way to keep communities safe.

White — EMS and Medical Responders
Represents EMTs and paramedics who provide emergency medical care, respond to 911 calls, and work to save lives.

Gold — 911 Dispatchers
Honors the dispatchers who answer emergency calls, send help, and guide first responders to people in need.

These are the common meanings of the colored lines on a combined first responder flag.

What do the other parts mean?

Black and white stripes: On many versions, these create the background for the colored lines. The design is often used to emphasize the featured service and honor those who serve and those who have died in the line of duty.

The stars: If the flag uses the American flag design, the stars represent the 50 states.
The stripes of the American flag: The 13 stripes represent the original 13 colonies.

The thin colored lines: They symbolize the different public safety professions and their commitment to protecting the community.
The meanings of the background and colors can vary by flag design, so not every interpretation is universal.

For Cobb Island Volunteer Fire Department & EMS: The red line honors your firefighters, the white line honors your EMS personnel, and the blue line honors law enforcement. The gold line recognizes the dispatchers who help coordinate emergency responses.

The flag is a reminder that these professionals work together as one team, often under dangerous and difficult conditions, to protect the people they serve.
