| Twenty-five years later, we pause to remember September 11, 2001 β a day that forever changed our nation and the lives of countless families.
On that morning, America was attacked when terrorists hijacked four commercial airplanes. Two planes struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City. Another struck the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. The fourth plane, United Airlines Flight 93, crashed into a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, after courageous passengers and crew fought back against the hijackers.
2,977 innocent people lost their lives. They came from all walks of life β parents, children, spouses, friends, coworkers, first responders, military personnel, and citizens from across our country and around the world.
We remember the 343 firefighters and 60 police officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while running toward danger to save others. We remember the EMS personnel, emergency workers, military members, and countless ordinary citizens who answered the call with extraordinary courage.
We remember the families who received the phone calls no family should ever have to receive. We remember the children who grew up without a parent, the parents who lost sons and daughters, and the communities forever changed.
For those of us who serve in the fire and EMS community, September 11 carries a particularly powerful meaning. The images of firefighters and emergency personnel climbing the stairs while others were running down remind us of the courage, selflessness, and commitment that define our profession.
We remember the lives lost.
We honor the heroes who responded.
We stand with the families who continue to carry their loss.
And we will never forget.
